The Old Town in Phuket is the nicest place to stay. The cosy historic centre attracts many travellers every year. There are all kinds of colonial-era houses, in different colours, where you can clearly see the European architectural style. Here there is a completely different atmosphere, you have plenty of good and also cheap accommodation to stay good. Throughout the neighbourhood are tasty coffee bars and hip cafes. The only downside is that you don’t have a beach here and it is quite crowded as many locals live here.

On Sundays, the city centre, near Thalang Road, turns into a bustling, cosy market with live music, handmade gadgets and special food stalls. This is the place to be for the real local experience, for example, you can eat delicious food there. It is one of the nicest markets held on Phuket, every Sunday from 4pm.

The perfect location to stock up on souvenirs and admire the colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings the district is known for.

This is the most famous beach in Phuket and perhaps even in all of Thailand. Phuket has a total of 35 different beaches, from mega busy ones like: Patong Beach to quiet gems like: Freedom Beach, Banana Beach and Laem Sing Beach.

Patong Beach is a kilometre-long sandy beach where all kinds of water activities can be done, such as paragliding and surfing, but the beach also offers lovely beach beds and umbrellas for rent. It is a beautiful beach with virtually no trash anywhere and the water is crystal clear.

After a day of relaxing on the beach, fancy a beer, snack or socialising? Then Patong Beach is the place to be, as it is located next to Bangla Road (also known as the ‘Bangla Walking Street‘), home to the busiest nightlife in Phuket.

Like everywhere else in Thailand, you are also bound to come across beautiful temples in Phuket. Of the total 30 temples, Wat Chalong is the most beautiful and special. The shrine is dedicated to Luang Pho Chaem (1827-1908) and Luang Pho Chuang (1875-1945). These former herbalists healed many sick people at the time, leading many people to believe they possessed supernatural powers. Here, at Wat Chalong, people gather to worship the two monks. This religious site is about a 20-minute drive from Phuket Town.

The beautiful Wat Chalong is gold-trimmed on the outside and very impressive. Especially if you go there in the evening as the temple is beautifully illuminated. The temple consists of three floors with a rooftop terrace, where you have a beautiful view of the surroundings, the adjacent lake and the giant Buddha. Inside the temple, you will see all kinds of beautiful murals and statues made of gold leaf. Ceremonies are regularly held here, so ask your hotel in advance if there is anything to do at the temple.

Bangla Street in Phuket is the street when it comes to stepping out! Bangla Road is the ‘strip’ to be on after the sun has set. Flickering neon lights, colourful signs, loud music and sexy girls luring tourists in with discount coupons. Consequently, you won’t get through the street without facing a ping-pong show menu card.

Over a length of four kilometres, you will find plenty of bars, pubs, nightclubs, Go-Go bars and restaurants. The possibilities are endless. You can go dancing in a disco, watch a boxing match, go to a Go-Go bar or nightclub, or something really special: watch an extravagant show with the most beautiful ladyboys. If you are not into the crowds and want to avoid the frenzy a bit, head to Soi Gonzo, the Aussie Bar or the semi-chic White Room Nightclub.

Just keep in mind that this is not a place for young children. There are a lot of women and lady-boys, walking around. If you’ve never seen this before, a world will open up for you. And if you are unlucky or just lucky a little more!

Phang Nga Bay, is one of Thailand’s most famous bays. Phang Nga Bay consists of stunning surroundings, with immense rocks rising from the clear sea water. It is therefore the setting of several films for good reason. Its most famous island is the James Bond island, which features in ‘The Man with the Golden Gun‘. Star Wars fans will recognise the planet Kashyyk, as Phang Nga was where it was filmed.

Around the Bay, you can cruise for hours past the immense rocks, bays, beautiful beaches and caves, or hire a kayak and kayak through the beautiful mangrove forests. On your tour or overnight stay, be sure to visit the fishing town of Phang Nha itself. From here, longtail boats leave in small groups, while from Phuket you’ll end up on a larger boat. On Phang Nha, you have the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint, which gives great views of the floating village and the immense boulders.

The absolute attraction on Phuket is the colossal white Buddha. The imposing statue is made entirely of marble, and at 45 metres tall is the third largest statue in all of Thailand. Construction of this magnificent Buddha began back in 2004, yet it is still under scaffolding. It is unknown when the Buddha will be fully completed and the scaffolding will go away.

However, it is not just the Buddha that makes the mountain worth visiting. Via about 100 steps, you reach the top and are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the entire island of Phuket and the other islands off the coast. On the way back, don’t forget to stop for a drink or snack at one of the viewpoint restaurants found along the way.

The Big Buddha is very important to locals. Therefore, behave and dress respectfully towards the locals. Do not climb the statue and wear appropriate clothing and therefore no bikini, swimsuit, tank top and flip-flops. Wear long clothes or bring a sarong!

After visiting the Big Buddha, still time to spare ? You can easily combine the Big Buddha and the Chalong temple. They are about 8 kilometres apart.

When in Krabi, don’t miss the cool climb to Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea). Challenge yourself to climb the 1,237 steps that lead you to a limestone rock 600 metres up, where you can visit the impressive golden Buddha that sits on top. From here you have a great view over the entire valley of Krabi.

According to many stories, a tiger once lived in the limestone caves, which gave the temple its name. Now there are no tigers, but there are plenty of cheeky monkeys, so make sure you always keep your belongings with you. After all, the monkeys steal everything they can get their hands on.

A good time to visit the temple is at sunrise or sunset, to see the magical colours of the sky against the gold of the Buddha.

A fun way to explore Bangkok is, of course, a ride in the famous tuktuks. A tuktuk is a three-wheeler where you can sit in the back. These well-known colourful, motorised three-wheel taxis are a convenient and fun mode of transport to get around town. The tuktuk drivers tear around Bangkok, taking you to all sorts of places in the city.

The tuktuk drivers can take you from A to B just like a regular taxi. But if you are planning to visit several sights in the city one after the other, you can also ask the tuktuk driver to take you anywhere throughout the day. Make very good arrangements with your driver! Start with a fixed price for the day (you can negotiate a lot on this) and agree on which places he will take you to. This saves a lot of hassle, you don’t have to negotiate the price every time, and your regular tuktuk driver is ready to go everywhere!
