Planning to visit the Citadel of Cairo? Check out our information below!

Information:

The Cairo Citadel is one of the most elegant fortresses of the Middle Ages and therefore an important landmark of the city. Located in downtown Cairo, the Citadel houses several museums, mosques and other buildings. It is an ancient bastion that marks the city’s skyline like no other building. The Citadel can be recognised by the towering minarets of Muhammad Ali’s grand mosque. There is no better place in Cairo to get an idea of just how gigantic this city is.

The original citadel was built in 1176 under Saladin, but over the many centuries this fortress underwent many changes. The Grand Mosque in the citadel is the largest built in the early 19th century. The exterior of the Citadel dominates the cityscape, but the interior is actually much more impressive. Inside the Citadel stands the beautifully decorated dome and the impressive Carrara marble mausoleum of Mohammed Ali Pasha. It is definitely worth a visit!

Opening hours:

The citadel of Cairo is open every day of the year from: 08:00 AM to 04:30 PM.
