The Hofburg, located in the centre of Vienna is a collection of beautifully historic buildings, museums, a library and the famous Spanish Riding School. It used to be the custom that every time a new emperor (empress) was appointed, the Hofburg, the palace complex of the Habsburgs, was remodelled or extended. When you walk by the Hofburg, it immediately takes you back to the days of the Habsburg nobility, who lived there from the 13th century until just after the First World War. The palace has been remodelled, rebuilt and built on over different periods of centuries, the palace is a mix of styles.

Today, the office of the Austrian president sits at the Hofburg. You can still visit several museums in the palace, such as the Kaiserliche Schatzkammer and the Sissi Museum. In another part of Hofburg, you can visit the riding hall with the horses of the Spanish Riding School. The horses of Vienna’s famous Spanish Riding School receive training in the Hofburg Palace during the day. Among other things, they learn to dance to classical music. Fun to watch! ย

Information:

Europe’s finest library is in Dublin on the grounds of Trinity College. Dublin’s 16th-century, oldest university is located on the edge of the city centre and you can easily visit the campus. Trinity College Library is more than 300 years old and houses thousands of books, including The Book of Kells, which was written some 1,200 years ago.

The Long Room is a library like the movies: a gigantic room with dusty bookcases reaching to the ceiling. Since this library is also a legal depository, it contains a total of about 4.5 million printed books and manuscripts, including the Book of Kells, a well-preserved manuscript from 800 AD with beautiful calligraphy. The book is part of the Bible created by monks in the 9th century. The drawings are very special, sophisticated and sometimes even coloured with semi-precious stones. The Book of Kells, is one of the most extraordinary sights in Dublin.

You do have to buy a ticket to see the library; the rest of the university grounds are public.

If you are in Dublin, be sure to visit Trinity College, the city’s university. It is the most beautiful university in Ireland and one of the oldest universities in Britain. Trinity College is a highly regarded university known for academic excellence. Admission to programmes is competitive and based on academic merit.

Founded in 1592 by order of Queen Elizabeth I of England, Dublin University is located on the outskirts of the city centre. The campus grounds are free and easy to visit. Once you walk around here, you will follow in the footsteps of famous Irish writers like Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde, who walked around here. The old library with the Book of Kells is especially impressive to visit.
