Darwin Eco-Système is the biggest surprise in all of Bordeaux. Leave the old busy city centre and visit this trendy spot in a former military barracks, the Niel. Darwin is the hotspot in Bordeaux and is located across the river Garonne. Today, the barracks have been converted into a hotbed of art, coffee bars, shops a skate park and numerous cultural events.  

The thinking behind Darwin Eco-système? As the name suggests: Corporate social responsibility and the emphasis is on environmental awareness in this building. Most restaurants and shops stock Eco products. It is a great place to spend time enjoying the street art, listening to live music, a DJ, or by watching skateboarders do tricks in the skate park.

Bordeaux is a beautiful city with plenty to see and do. One of the best places to visit is the beautiful Cathédrale Saint-André. Located in the central square of Pey Berland, the cathedral is a national monument of France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Gothic architecture is breathtaking, consisting of detailed stone sculptures, stone arches and two huge spires, the cathedral’s history is fascinating.

There are several activities to do at the cathedral. Visit the treasury, attend a service, or climb to the top of the bell tower for spectacular views of Bordeaux. To get to the top of the bell tower is a real climb, as you have to climb 231 steps.

Bordeaux is a true wine city and is surrounded by large vineyards. In the city itself, you can find several museums dedicated to all the wines produced in the Bordeaux area. The Cité du Vin is one of the most striking buildings in Bordeaux. This state-of-the-art cultural museum, has all sorts of things to do with wine. The museum is not only about Bordeaux wines, but about all kinds of wine regions in the world. Audio guides are available and the museum is very interactive. Not only will you feast your eyes, your other senses will also be pleasantly stimulated.

The building covers an area of 3,000 square metres, has a 55-metre-high tower, looks magnificent and if you take a tour, it ends in the belvedere bar, where you can combine a glass of wine with a fantastic view of Bordeaux and the Garonne. If you love wine, this is definitely a must!

The beautiful 18th-century Place de la Bourse can be found on the edge of the Garonne riverbank. The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings, including the Palais de la Bourse and the Musée National des Douanes. At Place de la Bourse is a beautiful fountain, Fontaine des Trois-Grâces. Based on a story from Greek mythology, the fountain is very impressive.

Just in front of the beautiful square is the Miroir d’Eau, a photogenic mist fountain. This is a 130-metre-long pool with the largest reflecting pool in the world. It is only 2 cm deep and covers granite tiles, making the water look like glass when there is a layer of water. This gives you a spectacular view, which is especially special in the evening when all the buildings are lit up. So this square is a must visit during your city break in Bordeaux.
