Standing on Groenplaats, you cannot avoid the Antwerp Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kathedraal), this magnificent cathedral standing in the heart of Antwerp. The cathedral’s tower is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, but the rest of the building is also beautiful. The distinctive tower used to serve as a watchtower, which also housed a fire watch. These, with the help of a large storm bell, could warn the people in case of a fire.

Construction of the Cathedral began in 1352, but over the years it was unfortunately damaged several times, so the cathedral was not completed until 1521, with valuable works of art being lost. Don’t let this stop you, be sure to visit the Antwerp Cathedral of Our Lady as both the exterior and interior are beautiful.

Antwerp’s railway station is one you must have seen once.

The building dates from the 19th century and has an eclectic architectural style. The architect was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. This is well reflected in the vaulted domed passages and the large metal structures. The end result is truly stunning!

The most famous square in Antwerp is undoubtedly the Grote Markt. It is one of the most beautiful town squares in Europe. Around the Grote Markt you will find several cosy cafรฉs and restaurants. Above all, admire the 16th and 17th century guild houses which give it a beautiful sight. Besides these beautiful guild houses, Antwerp’s city hall is also located on the Grote Markt.

The town hall has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, and in addition to its beautiful Renaissance exterior, the interior with paintings by Hendrik Leys, among others, is definitely worth a visit. If you want to see the inside of City Hall, you can join a guided tour.
