The Medina of Fes

The Medina of Fes

Planning to visit the Medina of Fes? Check out our information below!

Information:

Fes’ medina (called Fรจs el-Bali) is the oldest and largest in all of Morocco and even North Africa. Dating back to the 9th century, the medina encompasses 1,200 years of history. The old medina is a seductive labyrinth in which you are sure to get lost. But walking through these medieval alleys is an experience (The medina consists of 9400 alleys!). Because of its historical significance and cultural importance, the medina is also on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

In the Medina, you can wander, shop and photograph endlessly. Take ample time to get to know the ingenious street pattern, either on your own or with a guide. You can book guided tours at most Riads and hotels. It is good to know that Talaa Seghira and Talaa Kebira are the two main streets in the medina. The two main streets are easy to spot as they are a bit wider and busier than all the alleys. These streets are also where you will find most of the shops and restaurants. It helps enormously if you know where they are to find your way around the medina. Using coloured markings, you can follow the route of your choice. You have to pay attention here though, the markings often hang quite high on the wall.

The Medersa Bou Inania is very similar to the famous Koranic school in Marrakech in architectural style and details, but is a lot smaller and generally a lot quieter. Here you can admire the beautiful carvings and detailed mosaics at your leisure. But the prayer hall is for Muslims only.
